Plaster Patch Repairs in Gedling

From the old village around All Hallows' Church to brand-new houses at Chase Farm, Gedling has old and new homes side by side, and they need different kinds of patch repair.

Old village, new estate

Gedling is about two miles east of Mapperley. It is recorded in the Domesday Book, and All Hallows' Church dates from the 11th century. In June 2025 Gedling Borough Council adopted a new Gedling Village Conservation Area. At the other end of the scale, the Chase Farm development off Colliery Way is still growing, with a final phase of 433 homes approved in 2022, including a pilot of 33 built to the Future Homes standard.

So a plaster repair in Gedling could be in an older house in the village or on plasterboard that only went up last year.

Snagging and settling at Chase Farm

New houses are lined with plasterboard, either on timber or metal framing or fixed to blockwork with adhesive dabs. It is quick and clean, but plasterboard dents more easily than solid plaster, and it will not hold heavy fixings without the right plugs. Typical requests in a newer home include:

  • holes and torn paper where shelves, curtain poles or a TV mount have pulled out
  • cracks along board joints and at wall-to-ceiling corners as the house dries out
  • knocks from carrying furniture up a new staircase
  • cuts made for extra sockets or cables after moving in

Hairline cracks are normal in the first couple of years. If your house is still in the builder's warranty period, ask the developer first. When the cracks have stopped moving, the joint can be raked out, taped and finished so it does not reopen.

Older homes near the village centre

In older properties, walls may be solid brick with softer plaster that has lost its bond in places, and some ceilings will still be lath and plaster. Patching there means taking out every bit of loose material first and using a backing that works with the wall, so the repair does not crack around its edges a few months later. If your house is in the new conservation area and is also listed, check with the council before any original plaster is removed.

Older ceilings sometimes show a fine web of cracks where the plaster is starting to let go of the laths. A gentle press near the crack tells you a lot. If the ceiling gives, that area needs securing or replacing with board, not just filling.

Frequently asked questions

Yes, once they have stopped moving. Cracks along board joints and corners are common while a new house dries out. If you are still within the builder's warranty, check with the developer first. After that, the cracks can be opened, taped and finished so they stay closed.
