What indoor plastering covers

How a plastering job runs
- Getting in touch. Call 07877 353120 or send photos through the enquiry form. Photos of the rooms and a rough idea of sizes help us understand the job.
- Looking at the walls. We check the condition of the existing plaster: whether it is sound, whether any is blown or loose, and what is behind it. That decides whether a skim is enough or whether some areas need more work first.
- Preparation. Floors and furniture are covered, sockets and switches are protected, and loose or damaged plaster is taken back. Beads go on external corners so they stay sharp and straight.
- Plastering. Walls and ceilings are coated and trowelled up to a smooth finish.
- Drying and decorating. Fresh plaster turns from dark to light pink as it dries. A skim usually needs around a week, longer in cold or damp weather, before a mist coat of thinned emulsion goes on.
Older houses, newer homes and everything in between
Different homes need different approaches. Older properties often have lime or early gypsum plaster that has come away from the brickwork in places, so the loose areas need taking back and building up before a skim. Newer homes usually have plasterboard, which can be skimmed once the joints are taped. Rooms that have been rewired, replumbed or had a wall knocked through tend to need a mix of patching and skimming to bring everything level again.
Artex ceilings
Textured coatings like Artex were popular for decades and many homes still have them. Skimming over a textured ceiling is usually the simplest way to get a flat, modern finish without scraping it off. Textured coatings applied before 2000 can contain asbestos, so they should be tested before anyone sands, scrapes or drills them. Skimming over the top leaves the old coating undisturbed.
