Gedling is about 2 miles east of Mapperley, and since Colliery Way opened in 2022 it has been linked directly to Mapperley Plains. There are two very different kinds of home to plaster here: houses in the old village, whose history goes back to the Domesday Book, and the new homes on former colliery land at Chase Farm.
Plastering in the older village
Gedling Borough Council adopted a new Gedling Village Conservation Area in June 2025. Conservation area status mainly governs outside appearance, so plastering a room is not usually affected, though a listed building needs consent for internal changes that affect its character. Older houses in a village setting commonly have solid walls and, in some cases, lime plaster. Lime lets a solid wall breathe, and covering it with dense gypsum or sealing it under vinyl paint can trap moisture. Where the old plaster is sound, small repairs in a compatible material are often the right call; where it has failed, we talk through the options before stripping anything.
Typical jobs in older homes include ceilings that have cracked or sagged, chimney breasts left uneven after a fireplace was taken out, and long hall and stair walls with years of filler showing through the paint.
Chase Farm and other newer homes
In 2022 the council approved Keepmoat Homes' final phase at Chase Farm: 433 homes with 2 to 5 bedrooms, including a pilot of 33 built to the Future Homes standard. Houses like these are usually finished with plasterboard rather than wet plaster. In the first couple of years, as the structure dries and settles, small cracks at board joints, around door frames and where walls meet ceilings are normal. Check what your builder covers before arranging repairs. Once that period is over, owners often want walls skimmed for a harder, smoother finish, or a ceiling made good after a light fitting has been moved.
Very energy-efficient homes can rely on the inner face of walls and ceilings to help keep the house airtight. If you are cutting into walls for new sockets or a media wall, ask the builder whether those surfaces form part of that layer, and have new openings sealed.
