Wall Panelling in Gedling

Gedling is about two miles east of our Mapperley base, where new homes at Chase Farm sit alongside an old village with its own conservation area.

Feature walls for new homes at Chase Farm

Chase Farm is bringing hundreds of new homes to Gedling. It is reached by Colliery Way, the road built across the old Gedling Colliery site, and in 2022 the council approved the final phase of 433 homes, from two to five bedrooms. A new house is a blank canvas, and a panelled wall is one of the easier ways to give a room some personality: full-height shaker frames behind a bed, board and batten across a living room wall, or half-height panelling running up the stairs.

Fixing panelling to plasterboard

Most new-build walls are plasterboard, either fixed to blockwork on dabs of adhesive or screwed to a timber or metal frame. That changes how panelling is attached. Panel adhesive grips the face of the board well, but pins have little to bite into on a hollow wall, so they mainly hold each piece in place while the adhesive sets. Where there are studs behind, we pin into them. We also check every wall with a straight edge, because even a new wall can have a slight bow or a proud joint that would show behind a long, dead-straight strip of MDF.

New houses also move a little as they dry out, which can open hairline cracks at joints and corners. Fine cracks are worth filling before panelling covers them, so movement is less likely to show along the panel edges later.

Older homes in Gedling village

Away from the new streets, Gedling is a much older place. It is recorded in the Domesday Book, and in June 2025 Gedling Borough Council adopted a new Gedling Village Conservation Area. Conservation area rules mainly concern the outside of buildings, but if your house is listed, check with the council before fixing anything to the walls inside.

In older properties we look for hollow or tired plaster first and repair it, or skim the wall, so the panels have a firm base. Picture-frame moulding often suits an older room, while shaker frames give a cleaner look.

Finishing and talking to us

Once the panels are on, every joint and pin hole is filled and sanded and the edges are caulked, so the whole thing is ready for you or your decorator to prime and paint. Satin or eggshell paint copes with knocks in a hallway better than matt.

On a clear day the high point of Gedling Country Park looks out as far as Belvoir Castle. We are a lot closer than that, just two miles away in Mapperley. Ring 07877 353120 or send a message with a photo through the enquiry form. We work seven days, from 7am to 5pm.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Panel adhesive bonds well to plasterboard, and where there are studs or a frame behind, pins can go into them. We check the wall for bows and fill any settlement cracks first, so the finished panelling sits flat and the lines stay crisp.
