With its Minster, its prebendal houses and a conservation area first designated in 1968, Southwell has a lot of old walls. Patch Me If You Can travels about ten miles north-east from Mapperley to plaster homes across the town, and approaches each one according to its age.
Historic streets
Southwell's historic districts each have their own feel: the Prebendage around the Minster, Burgage around Burgage Green, Hightown along Westgate, and the former hamlets of East Thorpe and West Thorpe. A 2022 council review also proposed bringing the 19th-century workers' housing on Dover Street and Chatham Street, and the Edwardian villas on Halam Road, into the conservation area.
Older houses were usually finished in lime plaster, and lime and modern gypsum plaster do not always mix well. So the first job is finding out what is already on the wall, then explaining the options honestly before any patch repairs or re-plastering begin. For a listed building, consent may be needed even for internal work, so speak to Newark and Sherwood District Council before you start.
Everyday work too
Not every Southwell job is historic. Plenty of rooms simply need skimming, a damaged ceiling plasterboarded, a stud wall to divide a space, a media wall in the sitting room or wall panelling in the hall. Whole properties are taken on as well, and all of it counts as the indoor plastering we do.
