What a media wall is
A media wall is a feature wall built out from an existing wall to house your television, an electric fire and often shelves, alcoves and lighting, all within one clean, plastered surface. Cables are hidden inside, the TV sits neatly in its own recess, and the room gets a focal point that looks built in rather than bolted on.
Patch Me If You Can builds media walls in living rooms, bedrooms and garden rooms across Nottingham and up to 30 miles around. The finish is where a media wall is won or lost: flat faces and crisp edges in every recess, and that is exactly what 18 years of plastering brings to the job.
Designing your media wall
Every media wall is built to suit the room and the way you use it. Things to decide early on:
- The TV. Its size and the height you want it at, which sets the size of the recess or the position of the bracket
- An electric fire. Most media walls include an inset electric fire, and the model you choose decides the size of the opening and the space around it
- Alcoves and niches. Shelving niches either side, vertical slots or open alcoves for speakers, books and ornaments
- Lighting. LED strips set into recesses to light the alcoves and the TV surround
- Soundbar and devices. A recess or shelf for a soundbar, and space for consoles and boxes with cable routes to them
- Size and shape. A full-width wall, a chimney-breast style centre section, or something in between
If you have pictures of media walls you like, send them through when you get in touch. They are the quickest way to show the look you are after.
How a media wall is built
The frame. A frame of timber or metal studs is fixed to the floor, ceiling and existing wall, built to the exact sizes of the TV recess, fire opening and alcoves.
Planning the cables. Before boarding, the routes for power, aerial, HDMI and lighting cables are planned so nothing shows once the wall is finished. Sockets and wiring for the fire, TV and lighting must be installed by a qualified electrician.
Boarding. Plasterboard is cut and fixed around every recess, with corner beads on the edges to keep the lines sharp.
Plastering. The whole wall is skimmed for a smooth, seamless surface with crisp edges in every opening, ready for painting.
Electric fires and safety
Inset electric fires come with installation instructions that set out the size of the opening and the clearances and ventilation they need. The opening is built to those instructions, which is why it helps to choose the fire before the frame goes up.
Why a plasterer for a media wall
A media wall is mostly framing, boarding and plastering, and the finish is what everyone sees. Flat faces, straight edges and clean internal corners in every recess come from years of trowel work, so a media wall built and finished by a plasterer looks like part of the house rather than an add-on.
