Media Walls in Hucknall

Media walls for Hucknall homes, with a recessed TV, soundbar slot, LED lighting and hidden cables, from Butler's Hill to the new estate off Watnall Road.

A cinema feel at home

Hucknall has had the Byron Cinema since 1936, an Art Deco building of sandstock brick and Portland stone. A media wall brings a little of that feeling into your own living room: a screen set into a clean recess, light that frames it and no trailing cables to spoil the view. If you are not sure where to begin, begin with the TV, because its size and how far you sit from it shape everything else. Hucknall is about five miles north-west of our base in Mapperley, and we cover the whole town, from Butler's Hill and Westville to Beauvale and the West Hucknall Estates.

New homes off Watnall Road

An estate of more than 900 homes is going up on the former Rolls-Royce land on Watnall Road, with Persimmon's phase 5b of 150 homes approved in April 2023. A new-build living room often has a long, plain wall, which makes a very good starting point for a media wall. It can run the whole width of the room, or form a raised centre section with tall niches either side. Building on a new frame also means cables never need to be chased into the walls of a house that has only just been finished.

Framework knitting was once Hucknall's main industry, and it was a colliery town from 1861 to 1986. If your home is one of the town's older ones, the plan may work around a chimney breast or alcoves instead, but the method stays the same. Ashfield District Council lists a town centre conservation area, though its controls are mainly about the outside of buildings.

Sound, light and heat

Think about the sound early. A soundbar can sit in its own slot beneath the screen, and a recess either side can house speakers, with the cable routes for each one planned inside the frame. LED channels set into the edges of the recesses give the wall depth in the evening. If you want an inset electric fire, choose it first: its installation instructions set the size of the opening, the clearance around it and any ventilation it needs, and the frame is built to suit. A qualified electrician carries out all the electrical work. The frame, in timber or metal studs, is then boarded, beaded and skimmed ready for paint.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. A soundbar can sit in its own slot under the TV, and recesses either side can hold speakers. The cable routes to each one are planned inside the frame before it is boarded, so nothing shows once the wall is skimmed. A qualified electrician makes the electrical connections.
