Media Walls in Bingham

Media walls for Bingham's post-war and new-build homes and its older cottages, designed around your TV and fire and plastered to a smooth finish.

Mostly modern homes, and a few very old ones

Bingham has a historic Market Place with its octagonal Butter Cross, but most of the town's buildings are relatively new. Bingham grew a great deal after the Second World War, the 1960s and 1970s brought almost constant house building, and since around 2018 the Romans' Quarter north of the town has been planned for around 1,000 homes. For a media wall, that often means a living room with a straightforward, flat wall to work from. A plain wall in a newer house can take a full-width design, with a central recess for the TV, an inset fire beneath it and narrow, lit niches running up either side. If you have just bought in the Romans' Quarter, note where the aerial and power points are, so the cable routes can be planned around them.

The older part of town is different. Bingham's conservation area was the first in Rushcliffe, and it holds 24 listed buildings or structures, many clustered between the church and the Market Place and along Long Acre. If your cottage is listed, any internal alteration, including a media wall, needs listed building consent from Rushcliffe Borough Council first. In an older cottage the room may be smaller and the walls less even, so the design is usually more compact, built around a chimney breast where there is one.

How we put it together

We start with your choices: the TV, how high you want it, and whether you want a fire. An inset electric fire comes with installation instructions setting out the opening size, clearances and ventilation, and we build its opening to suit. The frame is timber or metal studs, fixed to the floor, ceiling and wall, with solid backing where the TV bracket will go. Cable routes for the screen, soundbar, fire and LED lighting are planned inside it before boarding, and all sockets and electrical connections are installed by a qualified electrician. LED strips come in warm and cool whites as well as colour-changing versions, and warm white tends to sit nicely beside a flame effect. Then the frame is boarded, beaded on the edges and skimmed, giving a smooth wall ready for paint.

Frequently asked questions

Possibly, but you need listed building consent from Rushcliffe Borough Council before any internal alterations to a listed building. Bingham's conservation area has 24 listed buildings or structures. If your home isn't listed, conservation area rules are mostly about exteriors, so an indoor media wall is not normally affected.
