D. H. Lawrence was born at 8a Victoria Street in 1885, in the heart of the miners' housing known as The Buildings. The mine owners Barber and Walker laid out about 300 terraced cottages there, in a grid around shared yards called The Squares, and they are among the earliest company housing in the country. Patch Me If You Can covers the whole town, about eight miles west-north-west of our base in Mapperley.
Miners' cottages and the wider town
Cottages of that age were built with solid brick walls and lime plaster, and more than 150 years on, the plaster often needs attention. The usual approach is cutting out loose or cracked areas, patching with a suitable base coat and skimming for a smooth finish, along with over-boarding lath and plaster ceilings that have started to sag. The Buildings sit within the conservation area Broxtowe designated in 1977, and the cottages were saved from demolition by a council scheme, so it makes sense to keep original features where you can.
Beyond the old terraces, the conservation area also takes in Victorian red brick shops along Nottingham Road and detached houses behind walls and trees on Church Street. Wherever you are in town, we can skim walls and ceilings, carry out patch repairs, put up plasterboard, build stud walls, create a media wall or fit wall panelling. Every kind of indoor plastering is covered, from a single room to a whole house.
