Hucknall is about five miles north-west of Mapperley, at the far end of the NET tram line, and Patch Me If You Can covers the whole town: Butler's Hill, Westville, Beauvale, the West Hucknall Estates and the streets around the market square.
Mining made Hucknall. Top Pit was sunk off Watnall Road in 1861 and Bottom Pit off Portland Road in 1866, and in under a century coal turned the place into a market town. It has kept growing since Bottom Pit closed in 1986. On the former Rolls-Royce land on Watnall Road, Persimmon's estate will have more than 900 homes once finished, with a phase of 150 approved in 2023.
The work, house by house
In an older house, walls that have been patched over many years rarely look right with one more patch, so a proper job usually means cutting back loose areas, making good and skimming the whole wall for an even finish. New houses like those on the Watnall Road estate are lined with plasterboard, which is ideal for adding a stud wall, building a media wall around the TV or fitting wall panelling up the stairs. Damaged ceilings can be plasterboarded and skimmed, and full properties of two, three or four bedrooms are part of the indoor plastering we take on.
