Old village, new estates
Gedling is a place where very old and very new sit close together. The village is recorded in the Domesday Book, its old parish church dates from the 11th century, and Gedling Borough Council adopted a new Gedling Village Conservation Area in June 2025. A short distance away, Colliery Way was built across the site of Gedling Colliery, which closed in 1991, and it now gives access to Chase Farm, where the council approved a final phase of 433 homes in 2022.
That mix suits a plasterer who is comfortable with both. In the older village properties, the work tends to be repairs: cracked or loose plaster cut back and patched, then skimmed so the repair disappears. New-build homes are usually lined with plasterboard, and owners often want to add to them: a stud wall to make an extra room, a media wall for a big screen, or wall panelling on a staircase or in a bedroom. Plasterboarding and skimming tired ceilings is needed in houses of every age.
