Getting the TV at the right height
A common mistake with wall-mounted TVs is putting them too high. With a media wall, the recess is built at whatever height suits the way you watch, so it is worth sitting on your sofa before anything is measured and noticing where your eyes naturally land. As a rough guide, the middle of the screen near seated eye level is comfortable for most people. If you want an inset fire underneath, the fire's opening and the clearance above it set the lowest point the TV recess can sit, which is another reason to choose both before the framing starts.
West Bridgford's mix of homes
West Bridgford is about three miles south of our base in Mapperley, across the Trent. Its central streets are mostly Victorian, laid out on a grid of tree-lined roads after the Musters family sold land for building under strict rules, with larger houses on main roads such as Musters Road and smaller terraces on side roads like Exchange Road. Further out, most of Gamston was built from the 1980s, with everything from two-bed bungalows to five-bed family homes, and Edwalton has estates from the early 1950s and the 1980s alongside the newer family homes at Sharphill.
That range shows up in the living rooms. A Victorian front room often has a chimney breast and alcoves to design around, while a lounge in Gamston or at Sharphill with a plain wall can take a media wall designed from scratch across its full width. Edwalton's conservation area, designated in September 2025, covers the old village and the large houses on Melton Road and Valley Road, but its controls are mainly about how buildings look from outside.
Light, shelves and the fire
LED channels set into the top of each niche or around the TV surround give a soft glow in the evening and show off the crisp edges of a skimmed recess. Alcoves can hold books, speakers or a soundbar. If you work from home in the same room, a niche for the router keeps it out of sight but close to the TV. The inset electric fire goes into an opening sized to its installation instructions, with the clearances it asks for. The frame is timber or metal, cable routes are planned inside it, and a qualified electrician installs every socket and connection before the wall is boarded and skimmed.
