Patch Plastering in West Bridgford

West Bridgford's central streets are mostly Victorian, while Gamston and Edwalton add 1950s, 1980s and new-build homes. We patch walls and ceilings in all of them.

Across the Trent from Mapperley

West Bridgford is about three miles south of Mapperley, over the River Trent. Its central area is described as mostly Victorian, laid out on a grid of tree-lined roads after the Musters family sold land for building under strict rules. Larger houses went on main roads such as Musters Road, while smaller homes and terraces, like those on Exchange Road, filled the side streets.

Ceilings in the Victorian grid

Houses of this age were built with lath and plaster ceilings, and many still have them. They are heavy and have survived well over a century, but they do not cope well with water. A leaking bath, a burst pipe in a loft or a shower tray seal that has failed can soak the plaster and loosen its grip on the laths above. After the leak is sorted, the stained area has to dry fully before anyone decides what to do with it.

Small stains on a ceiling that is still firm may only need sealing before painting. Where the plaster has sagged, cracked in a web pattern or feels loose, that section is taken down to the laths or the joists, and a piece of plasterboard is fixed in its place. The new board is then plastered and blended into the old ceiling around it. Where there is a cornice, new plaster is brought up to it with care rather than through it.

Gamston, Edwalton and newer homes

Further out, the housing changes. In Edwalton, large estates were first built in the early 1950s with more from the 1980s onwards, and new family homes have gone up at Sharphill Farm. Most of Gamston was built from the 1980s, with everything from 2-bed bungalows to 5-bed family houses. In these homes the patch jobs are more likely to be holes from old fixings, chipped plasterboard corners on landings, and gaps left after a kitchen or bathroom refit. Each one is filled, finished smooth and left ready for your decorator or your own paint.

Conservation areas and booking

Edwalton's old village and the Melton Road and Valley Road area became a conservation area in September 2025. Internal repairs in an ordinary house are rarely affected, but listed buildings have their own rules, so ask Rushcliffe Borough Council if yours is listed.

To arrange a repair, send photos through the enquiry form or call 07877 353120. Patch Me If You Can is open seven days, 7am to 5pm, and covers all of West Bridgford, from Trent Bridge to Wilford Hill.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Once any leak is fixed and the area is dry, loose or sagging plaster is removed and replaced with a section of plasterboard, which is then plastered to sit level with the original ceiling. Firm areas around it are kept, so you are not replacing more than you need to.
