A short hop north of Mapperley
Arnold is about two miles north of Mapperley, and Killisick runs right up to the Mapperley border. Patch Me If You Can covers the whole town, from Daybrook on the A60 Mansfield Road to Redhill, Warren Hill, Woodthorpe and Dorket Head. Because it is so close, it is easy to look at a damaged wall or ceiling and talk through what it needs.
Homes from several decades
Arnold's housing has been built up over a long period. The Arnold Local History Group records that Grove House was demolished in the 1920s to make way for housing, and that the grounds of Daybrook House, sold off by the Air Ministry from 1958, are now private homes. More recently, outline permission was granted in 2019 for 148 homes east of the A60 and north of Georgia Drive.
That spread matters for patch repairs, because each era of house is put together differently. Older houses tend to have plaster applied straight onto brick, and when it fails it lets go in hollow, crumbly sections that need taking back to solid material. Post-war homes usually have harder gypsum plaster and plasterboard ceilings, where the common jobs are dents, chipped corners and holes from old fittings. In a recent build, walls are often plasterboard fixed on adhesive dabs, so a hole from a removed TV bracket leaves a void behind the board rather than solid brick. That calls for a piece of new board or a backing behind it, not a heap of filler that will sink and crack.
New home, new cracks?
Fine cracks in the first year or two of a new house are common as the timber and plaster dry out and the building settles. If your home is still within the builder's warranty, check what it covers before booking any repair. Once those early cracks have stopped moving, they can be opened up, reinforced with tape where needed and plastered over so they stay hidden.
Any crack that is wide, growing, or running diagonally through brickwork is different. That needs a surveyor or structural engineer to look at it first, and plastering over it would only hide the evidence.
Weekend repairs for busy households
Wikipedia notes that many of Redhill's 2,000 or so residents are commuters. If you are out at work all week too, Patch Me If You Can works seven days, 7am to 5pm, so a Saturday or Sunday visit can be arranged. Call 07877 353120, or send a photo of the damage through the enquiry form with a rough size and the room it is in.
