Arts and Crafts homes in The Park
About half a mile north of the town centre, The Park is a late Victorian and Edwardian suburb and has been a conservation area since 1992. Its buildings are stone, red brick or both, many in the Arts and Crafts style with sash windows and leaded lights, and the houses run from terraces to large detached homes. Mansfield sits in a basin of magnesian limestone and sandstone, and those stones were quarried locally as the town's traditional building materials.
Arts and Crafts interiors leaned towards simple, honest woodwork, so plain square shaker frames or tall vertical boards often suit these rooms better than ornate moulding. A panelled hallway carried up the stairs to the landing fits the period well, and earthy colours such as olive green or warm stone suit the style. As with any older house, the existing plaster gets a careful check first: loose or hollow areas are repaired, and uneven walls are skimmed so the panels sit flat.
Miners' terraces and older streets
Coal was Mansfield's main industry for most of the 20th century, and rows of terraced houses built for mine workers survive in and around the town. In a terrace, half-height panelling in the hallway and up the stairs is a practical choice that protects the lower wall from daily knocks. A rail at around a third of the wall height, painted in a darker shade, hides scuffs and keeps the upper wall bright. Solid walls in older terraces can hide tired plaster under the paint, so we check before fixing anything and put right whatever we find.
New homes at Lindhurst and High Oakham Park
The Lindhurst development, planned with 1,700 homes, a school and a health centre, and High Oakham Park bring newer houses to Mansfield, and most of the old Mansfield Brewery site has been redeveloped as housing. In these homes, panelling is mostly a way to add character to plain walls: shaker feature walls, board and batten, or picture-frame moulding in a dining room. Plasterboard walls are checked for bows and joints, and the panels are bonded and pinned to suit what is behind the board. Pins hold each piece while the adhesive sets, and go into studs where there are any.
Getting a quote
Mansfield is around twelve miles from our base, well inside the 30 miles around Nottingham we cover. Every panel is filled, sanded and caulked, ready for priming and painting. Call 07877 353120 or use the enquiry form, ideally with a photo of the wall. If anything electrical needs moving, a qualified electrician should do that before the panelling goes up. We work seven days a week, 7am to 5pm.
