Indoor Plastering in Mapperley

Patch Me If You Can is based in Mapperley, so indoor plastering here is work on our own doorstep, from Victorian and Edwardian houses near Mapperley Park to the streets off Woodborough Road.

Mapperley sits on the narrow ridge along Woodborough Road, the highest part of Nottingham, and it is where Patch Me If You Can is based. Plastering here is the shortest trip we make, whether the job is a single ceiling or every room in the house. The homes on and around the ridge span well over a century, and the right approach changes with the age of the building.

From Mapperley Park villas to early-1900s streets

Just south-west of the main ridge, Mapperley Park is a conservation area known for Victorian and Edwardian houses on tree-lined avenues, many built after the Mapperley estate was released for building in 1903. Houses like these usually have solid brick walls and ceilings of lath and plaster. Over time the plaster can lose its grip on the brick, and a ceiling can sag where the plaster keys behind the laths have snapped. We tap walls to find hollow areas, take back what is loose and build it up before the finish goes on, and we look closely at a sagging ceiling before deciding whether to board over it or replace it. Conservation area rules mainly control the outside of a house, so plastering a room does not normally need permission, but a listed building needs consent for many internal changes.

East of Woodborough Road, houses on Blyth Street and Querneby Road date from around 1900, and over the next 20 years new streets reached as far as Porchester Road. These homes often have the same mix of old plaster and tired ceilings, plus chimney breasts and alcoves that show every bump once a room is redecorated.

Whole rooms, staircases and Artex

Many Mapperley jobs cover more than one room. If you are renovating, the order matters: electrics and plumbing go in first, then ceilings are plastered before walls, so nothing has to be cut into the new finish. Staircases and landings need planning too, because the walls run tall above the stairs and need a safe working platform so each wall can be finished in one go without visible joins.

An Artex or similar textured ceiling can be skimmed flat without scraping it off, which leaves the old coating sealed in. Textured finishes put up before 2000 may contain asbestos, so get one tested before anyone sands or drills it.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Mapperley Park is a short way south-west of Mapperley and well inside the 30 miles we cover. Its Victorian and Edwardian houses often need old plaster taken back and rebuilt before a finish coat, and that kind of work is a regular part of indoor plastering.
